Dishwasher Baskets or Spray Arms Discolored – Causes & How to Fix

Resolution

Why Are Dishwasher Parts Discolored?

Discoloration in your dishwasher is usually caused by food residues, minerals, or specific materials that leave stains during wash cycles. Over time, these deposits can affect baskets, spray arms, and internal surfaces.

How to Remove Dishwasher Discoloration

1. Check and Clean the Drain

  • Inspect the drain filter for food particles, grease, or large deposits
  • Remove any visible debris to prevent buildup and staining

2. Clean the Interior and Door Seal

  • Wipe the inside of the dishwasher with a soft, damp cloth
  • Pay special attention to the rubber door gasket, where residues can accumulate

3. Use Long Wash Cycles Regularly

  • Run long, high-temperature programmes at least twice a month
  • Frequent use of short cycles can lead to grease and limescale buildup, which causes discoloration

4. Use a Dishwasher Cleaner Monthly

Common Causes of Red and Brown Deposits

  • Red stains:
Caused by foods like tomato sauce, pasta sauce, or ketchup, which can leave pigment residue on plastic parts and dishes
  • Brown stains:
Often caused by terra cotta or clay cookware, which can release particles during washing

Tips to Prevent Dishwasher Stains

  • Rinse heavily soiled dishes before loading
  • Avoid washing porous materials (e.g. terra cotta) in the dishwasher
  • Use the correct detergent and dosage
  • Perform regular maintenance washes
