My fridge freezer is not working

Issue

Your fridge or freezer is not turning on and shows no signs of operation.

This is usually caused by a power supply issue, incorrect control settings, or the appliance being switched off. In some cases, a fault with an electrical or electronic component may prevent the appliance from starting.

Typical signs

  • No lights inside the appliance when door opened
  • Display remains dark
  • No operating sounds can be heard
  • Food temperature starts to increase
  • No cooling or freezing
  • Appliance does not respond when buttons are pressed

Applies to

  • Fridge freezers
  • Freezers
  • Chest freezers

Resolution

Start by checking the most common causes of the problem. In many cases, the appliance can be restored to operation without requiring service.

  1. Check that the appliance is connected to the power supply. Ensure the plug is fully inserted into the wall socket and has not become loose.
  2. Verify that the wall socket is supplying power. Disconnect the appliance and connect another electrical device, such as a lamp, to confirm that the socket is functioning correctly.
  3. Reset the appliance power supply. Switch off the wall socket, unplug the appliance, wait for 3-5 minutes, then reconnect the plug and switch the socket back on.
  4. Check whether the appliance has restarted. After restoring power, check whether:
    • The internal light operates when the door is opened.
    • The control panel is illuminated.
    • The compressor can be heard running.
  5. Check whether the appliance has been switched off using the control panel. Some models include an ON/OFF button that can disable operation even when electrical power is available. Refer to the user manual for model-specific instructions.
  6. Check the temperature setting. For appliances with a rotary temperature control:
    • Setting 1 corresponds to the warmest setting.
    • Settings 6-7 correspond to the coldest setting.
    • Setting 0 switches the refrigerator compartment off.
  7. Verify the appliance temperature. If the appliance starts operating normally after completing the above checks, allow it to run for approximately one hour before checking the internal temperature. Recommended temperatures:
    • Refrigerator: 4°C
    • Freezer: -18°C

Important

After reconnecting the appliance, cooling performance may not be restored immediately. The appliance may require time to reach the selected temperature, particularly if it has been switched off for an extended period.

For appliances with a rotary selector, set a value other than "0".

  • Level 1 means the warmest level
  • Level 6-7 means the coldest level
  • Level 0 means turning the fridge off

If the above advice resolves the issue, please check the internal temperature of the appliance after it has been running for approximately 1 hour.

You should keep your fridge temperature set at 4°C and your freezer set at -18°C.
