After cleaning the pump filter, the washing machine hums and does not start the wash cycle
Issue
- After cleaning the pump filter, when starting the wash programme, the washing machine does not start, does not take in water, and makes a humming noise.
- Buzzing noise when the washing machine starts
- No error messages – the washing machine simply “does nothing, “is stuck”.
Resolution
What should I do if the washing machine won’t start after cleaning the filter?
After cleaning the pump filter, the machine may emit a humming noise and fail to start washing for several reasons. One possible cause of your washing machine problem is that the pump filter is not fitted correctly after cleaning. In this case, make sure that the filter is properly positioned and tightened to ensure a good seal.
Tighten the filter by hand only; do not use pliers!
Then, to check whether your washing machine is working properly, follow these steps:
- Switch off the washing machine and unplug it.
- Gently tilt the appliance backwards at an angle (approx. 30–45°) for a few seconds – this may help the pump to draw in water.
- Pour about 2 litres of cold water into the washing machine drum. Close the washing machine door.
- Switch on the appliance and set the washing programme.
- Start the wash with the Start/Pause button.
Note: If the humming continues and the pump does not drain the water, it may be blocked or damaged.

Cause
- At the beginning of each washing programme, the appliance starts by pumping out the remaining water from the pump filter.
- When the filter is cleaned, any remaining water in the filter is removed, which can cause air to enter the appliance pump when the appliance is restarted and prevent the programme from starting.
