Hob, Oven or Cooker Does Not Turn On

Issue

If your hob does not turn on, if your oven is not heating up, or if your cooker does not respond when connected to the power supply, the issue is often caused by a power supply problem, an incorrect setting, or an installation issue.

Typical signs

  • Induction hob does not switch on
  • Ceramic hob is not responding to touch controls
  • Oven does not heat up
  • Oven display is blank or does not show the time
  • No spark from a gas hob
  • Cooker does not work after being connected to the mains supply

Applies to

  • Hobs
  • Ovens
  • Cookers

Resolution

Start by checking the most common causes of the problem. In many cases, the issue can be resolved without service.

1. Check the power supply (hobs and ovens)

Make sure the appliance is correctly connected to the electrical supply and that there has not been a power interruption.

Ensure that other kitchen appliances are working correctly. If they are not, this likely indicates a power supply fault requiring the intervention of a qualified electrician.

2. Check the fuse or circuit breaker (hobs and ovens)

Check whether a fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped.

If the fuse continues to blow or the circuit breaker trips repeatedly, contact a qualified electrician.

3. Perform a reset (hobs and ovens)

A reset can restore normal operation if the appliance has experienced a temporary electronic fault or power interruption.

  1. Disconnect the appliance from the power supply at the wall socket or by switching off the appropriate circuit breaker.
  2. Wait approximately 5 minutes.
  3. Restore the power supply.
  4. Check whether the issue has been resolved.

Note: For built-in appliances, it is not necessary to remove the appliance from the kitchen furniture or unplug it physically. Switching off the appropriate circuit breaker at the consumer unit is sufficient.

4. Check the oven settings

If the oven is not heating:

  • Set the correct time if 12:00 or 00:00 is flashing.
  • Select a cooking function.
  • Set the required temperature.

Many ovens will not operate until the clock has been set.

If you are unsure how to set the clock, activate a cooking function, or adjust the settings, download the user manual for your specific model.

The user manual contains detailed information about functions, symbols, clock settings, cooking programmes and display messages. As features can vary between models, it is recommended that you use the manual designed for your appliance.

Search for and download your user manual

5. Check the hob control panel (induction and ceramic hobs)

If the hob does not respond:

  • Clean the control panel.
  • Remove any moisture or grease from the surface.
  • Touch only one control area at a time.

6. Check your gas hob

If your gas hob does not ignite:

  • Check that the gas supply is turned on.
  • Ensure that the burner cap and burner crown are correctly positioned.
  • After ignition, hold the control knob in for a few seconds to allow the flame safety device to heat up.

If you can hear continuous clicking, the igniter keeps sparking, or the hob sparks even when a burner is not being lit, refer to the related article: The ignition on my gas hob keeps sparking.

7. Check for an error code (hobs and ovens)

If an error code is displayed on the hob or oven, it can provide valuable information about the cause of the problem. Identifying the error code is often the quickest way to locate the root cause of the issue and can significantly speed up troubleshooting and diagnosis.

Go to the relevant support category page and use the search function to locate information about the displayed error code:

Enter the code shown on the display (for example E3, E822, F214, C2…) into the search field to find the relevant support article.

The error code article may explain the possible cause, recommend self-help actions, and help determine whether a service visit is required.

Important

Do not attempt to carry out repairs on electrical or gas installations yourself. If the appliance requires inspection of electrical wiring or gas connections, contact a qualified professional.

When Is It a Genuine Fault?

In these situations, there may be a fault with the appliance:

  • The appliance remains completely unresponsive despite having power.
  • The display does not operate after a reset.
  • Fuses and circuit breakers are functioning correctly, but the appliance still does not work.
  • The hob or oven switches off immediately after being turned on.
  • An error message prevents normal operation.

FAQ – Hob, Oven or Cooker Will Not Turn On

Why is my oven not working after a power cut?

Many ovens require the clock to be set again after power has been restored.

Why is my induction hob not responding to the controls?

Moisture or dirt on the control panel, or touching multiple controls at the same time, can prevent operation.

Can a blown fuse stop my oven from working?

Yes. A loss of electrical power is one of the most common causes of this issue.

Why is my gas hob not producing a spark?

This may be caused by a lack of electrical power or incorrectly positioned burner components.

Does a flashing 12:00 or 00:00 indicate a fault?

No. It usually means the clock needs to be set before the oven can be used.

When should I contact a service engineer?

If the appliance still does not operate after completing the recommended checks, professional diagnosis may be required.
